چکیده

Cyclotron lines in accreting X-ray pulsar spectra result from the resonant scattering of X-rays by electrons in Landau orbits on the intense (∼10 G) magnetic fields near the neutron star poles. For this reason they are known as cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSFs). Because Landau transition energies are proportional to field strength (Ecyc = 12 keV approximately corresponds to B = 10 12 G), CRSF energies give us our most direct measures of neutron star magnetic fields. Other line properties, such as depths, widths, and presence of multiple harmonics, are strongly dependent on the details of the geometry and environment at the base of the accretion column. CRSFs therefore give us a sensitive (if difficult to interpret) diagnostic of the accretion region.

Timing and Spectroscopy of Accreting X-ray Pulsars: the State of Cyclotron Line Studies

A great deal of emphasis on timing in the RXTE era has been on pushing toward higher and higher frequency phenomena, particularly kHz QPOs. However, the large areas of the RXTE pointed instruments provide another capability which is key for the understanding of accreting X-ray pulsars – the ability to accumulate high quality spectra in a limited observing time. For the accreting X-ray pulsars, ...

Magnetic Fields of Accreting X–Ray Pulsars with the Rossi X–Ray Timing Explorer

Using a consistent set of models, we parameterized the X-ray spectra of all accreting pulsars in the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer database which exhibit Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Features (CRSFs, or cyclotron lines). These sources in our sample are Her X-1, 4U 0115+63, Cen X-3, 4U 1626-67, XTE J1946-274, Vela X-1, 4U 1907+09, 4U 1538-52, GX 301-2, and 4U 0352+309 (X Per). We searched for co...

Pulse Profiles and Cyclotron Line Energy Dependence on X-ray Pulsars Luminosity

We present the results of broad band (3-100 keV) observations of several X-ray pulsars with the INTEGRAL and RXTE observatories. We concentrate on the luminosity and energy dependence of the pulse profile and the variations of the cyclotron line energy. In V0332+53 the line energy changes nearly linearly with the source luminosity, while in 4U0115+63 its behavior is more complicated. Strong var...

X-ray pulsars: a review

Accreting X-ray pulsars are among the most luminous objects in the X-ray sky. In highly magnetized neutron stars (B ∼ 1012 G), the flow of matter is dominated by the strong magnetic field. The general properties of accreting X-ray binaries are presented, focusing on the spectral characteristics of the systems. The use of cyclotron lines as a tool to directly measure a neutron star’s magnetic fi...

Strong magnetic fields of accreting neutron stars Modeling cyclotron resonance scattering features

Schönherr, Gabriele Strong magnetic fields of accreting neutron stars — Modeling cyclotron lines — Accreting neutron stars in X-ray binaries are unique astrophysical laboratories for studying the physics of matter under extreme conditions. Not only does their compact nature lead to an amount of gravity only topped by black hole systems; they can also possess extreme magnetic fields, exceeding t...
